Sinharaja Rain Forest

Sinharaja is the only everygreen rain forest in Sri Lanka. It is situated in the South Western region of the island. It contains many rivers and streams. It also contains a large number of plants used for Aurvedic medicine. It has also become the home of many rare birds, animals, reptiles and insects. Nearly 60% of the trees found in this forest are endemic to Sri Lanka. It became a National Heritage Wilderness Area act in 1989.
Although this forest is legally protected, it has become the latest victim of some projects aimed to attract more tourists to the country. Apart from that the resident living in the surrounding villages enter this forest for their various needs. They cut down trees and spoil this unspoilt forest.
It is about 9000 hectares in extent. The government should take stern action against those who destroy this valuable forest.
